When a mine does close, many (largely local) jobs are lost. The economic spinoffs become scarce and eventually disappear altogether.
Concrete actions can be put in place to help mitigate these effects and leave the best possible lasting impact for the communities affected. One of the mine’s primary goals when it comes to training is to follow the proverb “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.”
In the event that the Nampala mine closes or that an employee leaves, the goal is to ensure that he or she will have the best possible employability for the future. This denotes excellent training, relevant experience and a suitable position. In fact, our organizational chart’s upper tiers are comprised of 44 Malian executives, 7 expatriates and 4 executives from the sub-region. We think that says it all.
